Wedding Make Up Tips & Advice

Khush Singh from Khush Singh-Celebrity & Indian Bridal Makeup Artist

bridebig

You want to look your best on your special day so make sure you plan your make up carefully, well in advance.

Whether you are doing your make up yourself or hiring someone else to do it, try to remember the following: -

  1. Your make up should be an enhancement of what you normally wear. For example, if you usually go for the natural look, stick to natural colours but slightly stronger. You don't want to try out blue mascara and red lipstick! Remember your fiancé is marrying you, so he should at least recognize you! Saying that you should define your features stronger than what you usually do, so they show up in photographs. You should feel comfortable in the make up you are wearing, this is not the time to try out anything drastic. On your day you don't want to be worrying about your shade of lippy whilst saying your vows.

  1. If you are having your make up done professionally, make sure you have a practice run before your big day. A good idea is to have a dress rehearsal and take photos, so you can then check that it will look good.
  2. Like a very dear friend of mine who recently got married, she cried the whole way through. Waterproof mascara is a must!
  3. You want your make up to last all day. There are some fabulous long lasting make up items around, which will ensure that you don't need to “touch up” during the day. Believe me you won't have time to re-apply your make up.

Make up Tips

  1. Starting with concealer and foundation. Be careful about the colour foundation you choose. Whilst you should always go for a match as near as your skin, anything too pale will make you look washed out if you are wearing a white/ivory dress. Try to choose a yellow toned foundation to bring warmth into your face. Alternatively use bronzing powder to give you a bit of colour – if you are wearing a low cut dress remember to sweep it across the chest area so you don't look “two toned”.
  2. Whilst there are some lovely “shine” products available to give a dewy complexion, again be very careful where you use them. In photographs it will be easy to mistake the “glow” for sweat – not nice. If you are applying a highlighter, stick to brow bones, cheekbones and a dab in the middle of your lips. If you are wearing a low cut dress add a little on your décolletage. Beware of any makeup that is too sparkly, this can look strange in the photos. Matte is usually best.
  3. Pending on what season you are getting married this will also have to be taken into account when planning your makeup. Avoid anything too shiny on your skin if you are getting married in the summer, stick to a coloured lip-gloss but don't wear shine all-over. Light formulas are better as you don't want your makeup melting in the sun. Winter make up can be more dramatic although again it's best to stick to a stronger look of your usual make up, bear in mind if it is a very cold day, you may want a green concealer. Green will counteract any redness to stop you looking like Rudolph!
  4. To make your lipstick last all day. First apply a lip primer to give your lips an even surface and rid of any flaky bits. I always apply foundation to the lips and let it dry – this gives a good base. Then line your lips with your lip pencil (which should be the same shade as your lipstick). Then fill in all your lips with the pencil. Finally on top of that apply your lipstick. Blot with a tissue and reapply your lipstick – repeat this twice. Now your lipstick should stay on all day. If it does start to wear off you will have the lip pencil underneath so your lips won't look patchy.
  5. Although foundation/concealer should be left to areas where you need it, i.e. around the nose then blended into the cheeks (you don't want to put it everywhere otherwise it will look false), you can also apply to your eyes to give your eye shadow a good base and something to cling on to.
  6. Eyebrows - have them professionally shaped before your big day and enhance them with a same colour eyebrow shade. Eyebrows frame your face and it can make a huge difference if you have the professionally shaped – a la Liz Hurley!
  7. To make your eyes look bigger and whiter choose dark navy mascara. If you are dark skinned or have brown eyes then black is usually best. Brown mascara can make eyes look tired.
  8. To lift your eyes apply a highlighter just below your brow bone. If you have small eyelids, apply a highlighter just in the center of the eyelid and a dark brown shade in the eyelid crease – this will lift your eyes. White/ivory eyeliner in the rim of your eyes also makes them appear brighter, however be careful if you wear contact lenses as your eyes maybe sensitive. To make your eyes look more wide set blend the highlighter in the inner corner of your eyes.
  9. For a natural flush apply a light natural pink shade onto the apples of your cheeks – don't go to harsh, especially if you are drinking which can give you a natural flush look without the blush.

Finally remember on your big day to have the following to hand.

  • Cotton buds, to wipe away any smudges under the eyes
  • Your lippy, should you need a touch up.
  • Some translucent powder to blot away any sweaty patches
  • Breath freshener (you will be doing lots of kissing – alcohol breath is not very attractive!)
  • Contact lens solution – if you wear them.
  • Small phial of your perfume to keep you smelling gorgeous – which you will be!
  • And your man of course!!!

The Advantages to Hiring a Makeup Artist

Khush Singh from Khush Singh-Celebrity & Indian Bridal Makeup Artist

I have worked with hundreds of brides during my career and the one thing that remains common is they all want to look their best on their wedding day. So often a bride plans every detail of her wedding months and sometimes years in advance, from the venue to the photographer and from the flowers to the gown.

Quite often the bride is so focused on the 'big' picture she forgets her vision of how she would like to look and feel beautiful on her special day. This is why you need a pro on board!

Are all makeup artists created equal?
Unfortunately, no. It's important that your chosen makeup artist is properly trained in all area's of makeup artistry. This means they should understand colour theory and the correct placement of colour for your face structure. It sounds simple but it's not.

Understanding which colours work on every skin tone is a skill. Knowing how to interrupt your ideal "wedding day look" is a talent!

A true professional makeup artist should display work that demonstrates their talent and range. When viewing their work, consider if their style of artistry suits your own style. Do the brides look fresh and pretty and does their work look clean and natural? Your chosen artist should correspond with you in a professional manner. You should feel comfortable speaking to him or her and be able to express what you want and be able to get it.

An experienced well sought after makeup artist will have published work in national and international magazines. This means they are trusted in the industry to provide the right look on camera.

Why does this make a difference to you and how you look on your wedding day?

professional makeup artist will understand what looks great on camera and in person and what doesn't. They know how to hide imperfections, ensure you're glowing without looking shiny and make all your attributes come to life!

When you hire a professional makeup artist on your wedding day, you will look fantastic in all your images. This means your wedding album will be something you can be immensely proud of for years to come.

Hiring a professional makeup artist on your wedding day will make you look and feel absolutely wonderful! Look for artists who also offer hair styling to make your whole look complete. You deserve it!

A Bride's Beauty Wedding Day Beauty Tips

Khush Singh from Khush Singh-Celebrity & Indian Bridal Makeup Artist

Your wedding is the "for sure" one time in your life when you want to look amazing. At your upcoming wedding ceremony and reception, you will be the center of attention, with all eyes on you as you make your way down the aisle toward your groom. Obviously, you want to look your absolute best. Prior to your wedding reception and ceremony, you need to find time to relax, while doing something special for you. Here are a few tips that will help you look like a fairytale princess on your wedding day.

Facial Care

If you have ever given thought to treating yourself to a facial, now would be the ideal opportunity. In fact, if you want to spend some quality time with your maid of honor, the two of you could enjoy a trip to the day spa together, a perfect way for thanking her for all her hard work and support. In addition to looking great, a facial will help you relax.

Today, just about every city has a day spa where you can be pampered, even smaller towns. An excellent option is a steam facial, which benefits you by releasing toxins and trapped dirt within the skin’s pores. Now, one important thing to consider is that a steam facial should be done between three and six weeks before the actual wedding day. The reason is that as the skin is cleaned, a breakout is possible.

Foot Care

In addition to walking down the aisle, chances are you will be standing for long periods of time while going through the wedding ceremony and reception. Considering that you will be wearing new shoes, standing in front of your guests while exchanging wedding vows, and then waiting to greet each guest as he or she walks through the receiving line, you want your feet to be comfortable. Then of course, remember the dancing and walking you will be doing at the reception as well.

To pamper your feet, we recommend you start by getting a good pedicure several days before your nuptials. By doing this, your toenails will look fabulous, which is especially a good idea if you plan to wear open toe shoes. In addition, you might want to consider visiting a reflexologist, which is a trained professional that uses a special form of Chinese wellness. With reflexology, pressure is applied to various points on the feet, which then benefits different parts of the body.

Body Massage

You definitely want to make time for several massages before the wedding ceremony. A full body massage is a great way to prepare for your wedding. Most importantly, you want to work with a qualified masseuse to help relieve stress, while making you feel like a brand new person. A massage the day before your wedding will relax both the body and mind, something you could do alone or with your maid of honor. As a result, you will arrive at your wedding feeling refreshed and ready to face anything ahead of you. In fact, most brides agree that after a body massage, they feel confident and more in charge simply from being stress free.

In summary, it's important to make time for yourself before your wedding ceremony and reception. By following these simple bridal beauty tips, you will look and feel your best on the most important day of your life, your wedding day!

Bridal Makeup Tips

Khush Singh from Khush Singh-Celebrity & Indian Bridal Makeup Artist

You have met the man of your dreams, fallen in love with him and even got the marriage date pinned down. And now, you are eagerly waiting for the day when the two of you would become each others -  forever. In the meantime, you have started with the preparations, right from choosing the venue to selecting the bridal dress. However, have you given any thought to the D-day makeup? No? Then, waste no more time and start taking care of yourself from this moment onwards. We have a number of make up tips and ideas just for you.

Makeup Ideas For Bride

Before The D-Day

  • Undertake a skin, hair and nail care program at least 6 weeks before the wedding. Start receiving regular facials and manicures and ask your beautician to advise on good beauty products.
  • Sunblock, Sunblock, Sunblock. When you have to go out, do not forget to use a sun-block, with at least 20 SPF.
  • If you have a stressful job (and who doesn't now a days?), make sure to go for a relaxing massage, at least once every two weeks. Use essential oils in your bath and try to attend at least one aromatherapy session before the wedding.
  • Do not compromise on your sleep; otherwise you will be hard-pressed to hide your under-eye circles on the D-day. At the same time, remember to smile and be happy. Remember, what goes on in your mind reflects on your face as well.
  • Make the booking for the make-up artists at least 3-4 months before the wedding. Let him/her see your outfit, so that he/she can plan the exact look. You should also go for a trial session before the wedding.

On The D-Day

  • It is always advisable to synchronize your makeup with the bridal outfit and jewelry. If they are extremely heavy, then you may prefer to get light makeup.
  • The time of your wedding also has a bearing on the type and amount of makeup. For instance, heavy makeup looks are great at night, but will make you seem very odd under the harsh rays of the sun.
  • If your wedding has been scheduled for spring/summer, bright, pastel shades may work best. For a winter wedding, warmer and deeper shades would be a better option.
  • Though your bridal makeup needs to be heavier and more dramatic than your normal look, it should no be so heavy that it makes you look like a made-up doll.
  • Remember you will be photographed a lot. Foundations will yellow tones work best with flash photography. While, the ones with pink tones will make you look too pale.
  • Always go for a lip-liner that is the same shade as your lipstick. Otherwise, you might end up with a lip-line that is too noticeable. At the same time, always stick to long-lasting lipsticks, for your wedding.
  • Remember, you have to balance the eye makeup with lip makeup. In case you want to go for dramatic eyes, go for a light-color lip shade. If you are using a dark lipstick, it is better to have natural, light eyes.
  • Never ever forget to apply the foundation on your neck, back, ears and other exposed areas of the body as well. Otherwise, your face will look painted on and your beauty - artificial.
  • It is advisable to go for a light dusting of translucent powder, to conceal any shine. You can also apply bronzing powder to warm your skin tone and get a natural glow.
  • Ask your sister, friend or some other female relative to carry a powder compact, tissues and lipstick for you. This will help you do the touch ups, especially if your wedding is going to be a long affair.Or better yet have your makeup artist stay for the ceremony.

Pop to your Lips as you walk down the aisle

Khush Singh from Khush Singh-Celebrity & Indian Bridal Makeup Artist

This summer you might want to add a little pop to your pucker as you’re walking down the isle.  Shake things up a little!  After all it is summer and color is everywhere…Hot colors include shades of red, orange reds, and fuchsia.  Check out Max Factor Long Wear Lip Color, Cover Girl Long Wear Lip Color, Avon’s Perfect Wear Extralasting Lipstick. These lip colors will stay on long after “You may kiss the bride…”

Hot Lip Color For Summer

With a veil like this you can focus all of the attention on your lips and keep your eyes looking soft and subtle.  Use Beth Bender’s Get in Line Eye Liner Stencil Kit to help you to achieve this simple eye look in minutes!  It’s so easy to use you won’t need to hire a make-up artist.  (With the extra money you can splurge on a bigger wedding bouquet.)

Remember girls, keep a journal close by.  This way you can document all of your wedding tasks and check them off as you go.  I find brides who glue photos of make-up looks they want to recreate for their wedding day into their journal as a reference really handy when they come to me.  It made it easier to match colors when we chose lip colours to match the dress, jewelry and look.

French fancies - always the envy of the rest of us, but now their beauty secrets are out... and over here

Khush Singh from Khush Singh-Celebrity & Indian Bridal Makeup Artist

The French know a thing or two about beauty, and skincare junkies have long been zipping over on the Eurostar to stock up on niche brands that aren’t available here.

But with two new ranges from across the Channel arriving in shops this spring —Absolution and Visoanska Paris — and a host of cult pharmacy lines available in the likes of Boots and Space NK, you can get your French fix without leaving the country.

Here, we reveal our pick of the best Gallic beauty buys:

Bonjour beauty: Products favoured by the French are making their way to shops here this spring

Absolute treat: Absolution's La Creme du Jour is full of antioxidants

Absolute treat: Absolution's La Creme du Jour is full of antioxidants

ABSOLUTION

What makes this brand unique is that it is not only organic, but unisex.

We love the bespoke element — you can add drops of specific skin-boosting concentrates to the different ranges to suit your skin type.

The hero product is Absolution La Crème du Jour (£49, beautique.com), a day cream high in antioxidants, such as green tea and calcium, aloe vera to hydrate and restructure the skin and mica, which is a natural mineral sunscreen.

The packaging looks great, too.

Visoanska Formule Anti-Age Optimale

VISOANSKA PARIS

Developed by Elizabeth Visoanska, this award- winning skincare line counts Hollywood star Angelina Jolie among its fans, and has a well-deserved reputation for its innovative anti-ageing products.

It’s claimed that 93 per cent of the ingredients come from natural sources, with a dash of biotechnology for added oomph.

The sellout product of the range is the Formule Anti-Age Optimale (£170, 30ml plus 30 supplements, harrods.com), a complete treatment that contains a topical cream and supplements to help reduce the first signs of ageing. It moisturises and protects the skin against free radicals — molecules responsible for ageing.

Klorane Dry Shampoo

KLORANE

Specialising in haircare for more than 30 years, Klorane has products to suit every type, tackling specific conditions such as scalp problems.

Products are packed with pure plant extracts and one of the best-sellers is the Dry Shampoo with Oatmilk (£7.50, johnlewis.com).

Fans include Britney Spears, Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow, who recently raved on her blog: ‘This stuff’s great when your hair needs a little spiffing up, especially if you want to maintain a blow-dry.’

It’s the stuff lazy girls’ dreams are made of.

Avene Eau Thermale Water Spray

Celebrity favourites: From left: Visoanska Formule Anti-Age Optimale, Klorane Dry Shampoo and Avene Eau Thermale Water Spray

EAU THERMALE AVENE

Nestled in the French village of Avene, the Saint Odile spring was discovered to have therapeutic properties in 1743. Since 1900, these have been used to create products for sensitive, intolerant and allergic skins.

The number one skincare brand in France, the range has something for every skin complaint — from acne to rosacea — but its sell-out product is the hydrating Avene Water Spray (£6.50, Boots).

As the water dries, it leaves a film of silica on the skin, softening and protecting the surface and leaving it feeling fresh and comfortable.

Model-turned-celebrity-TV-cook  Sophie Dahl wouldn’t dream of going on a long-haul flight without it.

Melvita Extraordinary Night Cream

Sell out: Melvita's Naturalift Youthful Skin Cream

MELVITA

When it comes to natural skincare, it doesn’t get much greener than Melvita, founded in 1983, deep in the French countryside on a bee farm, by the biologist Bernard Chevilliat.

He quickly realised the cosmetic value of wax and honey and concocted a blissful beauty range.

The sellout product is the Naturalift Youthful Skin Cream (£30, melvita.co.uk), formulated with oligo peptides, extracted from hibiscus seeds, to help protect the collagen and elastins in the skin, and argan nut proteins for tightening and firming.

These ingredients are blended with powerful antioxidants from alpine buddleia and wild beech buds, rich in flavonoids and polyphenols, to protect the skin against free radicals.

No wonder it’s a favourite of Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard and supermodel Eva Herzigova.

Watch out for the much-hyped new Bio-Excellence line.

Soothing: La Roche Posay's face cream

Soothing: La Roche Posay's face cream

LA ROCHE POSAY

La Roche Posay’s celebrity fan base reads like a Who’s Who of red carpet celebrities, with everyone from Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway, to Diane Kruger and Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester passionate devotees of the brand.

La Roche is so gentle it’s recommended by more than 25,000 dermatologists worldwide.

The key ingredient is selenium-rich spring water from a thermal spring in the village of La Roche-Posay in the French region of La Vienne.

The hero product is the Lipikar Baume AP (£11.50, stockists: 0800 055 6822), a fragrance and paraben-free cream designed for dry and irritated skin.

It soothes the skin immediately. Made with a blend of shea butter and canola oil, and rich in omegas 3 and 6, it intensely nourishes parched skin.

Make Up Ideas before YOUR Wedding Day

Khush Singh from Khush Singh-Celebrity & Indian Bridal Makeup Artist

Bridal Make up, Indian WeddingFirstly, it is very essential to find out the right kind of make up that would suit and compliment the bride`s style and skin tone. Some of the basic ideas for a bride that she can follow before the arrival of her special big day are as follows:

  • The bride should go for a hair, skin and nail care regimen at around four weeks before the big day.
  • Going for regular facials and manicures is also very important. Moreover, the would-be-bride can take the suggestions from the beautician about the beauty products that suits her skin type.
  • The bride should try and avoid going out in the sun as much as possible. If she has to go out for work, she must use a good quality sun-block.
  • For those who are working ladies, they should go for a relaxing massage once in a week. If possible, she must try to attend at least one aromatherapy session before her wedding day.

  • First and foremost, one should try to synchronize the make up with the wedding outfit and wedding jewelery.
  • If one opts for heavy bridal jewellery, the make should be kept to minimal and light.
  • Bridal make-up also varies and depends on the time of the wedding. For example for the evening occasions, one should go for heavy makeup looks.
  • It is said that bridal make-up should be heavy but it should not be heavier or kind of dramatic otherwise it will make one look like a doll.
  • Use some heavy-pigmented foundations after that it should be layered with powdered foundations. It will help in making the skin look smoother. Don`t forget to apply powder foundation on the neck. A concealer will help in blend both very well.
